A Wood River Police officer remains on duty while an investigation into a police involved shooting continues. 27 year old Matthew Lane of East Alton was shot and injured as police say he was trying to run down Wood River Police Sgt. Dan Bunt last month. Bunt fired a shot at Lane who was struck. Lane has been charged with attempted first-degree murder.

Bunt was placed on administrative leave for a few days, but is back on duty after city police officials found he acted properly. The Illinois State Police was also called in to take a look at the case and present any findings to the Madison County State's Attorney. This is standard procedure for most officer-involved shootings in Illinois. Wood River Police were investigating the report of a stolen car when they spotted a vehicle matching the description. As detectives approached, Lane allegedly got into the car and as police blocked his path, he reportedly drove at Sgt. Bunt who shot at him. Lane has recovered from his injuries and is being held in the Madison County Jail.
