Congressmen John Shimkus and Jerry Costello are teaming up for one of the last times on legislation in Washington D.C. Costello is retiring and Shimkus' district has been redrawn, effectively taking him from eastern Madison County to the Indiana border. One of the last things the pair hopes to accomplish in this area is the streamlining of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Approval process.
The reason is simple: repairs need to be made to an aging levee system in our area, and the Corps' approval process has been slowing down local governments. Shimkus says this is just another symptom of big government.
Upgrades to Metro East levees are planned to be completed by 2015. Preliminary construction is underway, but most of the work is not scheduled to begin until next year.
