Halloween is supposed to be harmless, and checking the Illinois sex offender registry online is one way to keep it that way. The Illinois attorney general’s office is reminding parents the registry is maintained at the Illinois State Police web site. You can type in your address to see which of your neighbors are sex offenders.

The attorney general’s office “will also be assisting local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to conduct compliance checks to make sure that registered sex offenders are registered correctly through the state’s sex offender registry,” says Maura Possley, a spokeswoman. “There’s also a toll free hotline that Attorney General (Lisa) Madigan established,” says Possley, “which is open to the public and law enforcement if they have questions or tips about non-compliant sex offenders.”
