There is a new twist on an old scam, in which thieves are preying on seniors by pretending to pitch them a medical alarm service. If they find a cooperative victim, the scammer can use the personal information they obtain to empty a person's bank account and ruin their credit. The Better Business Bureau says many of these calls appear to be originating from untraceable numbers in the 314, 636 and 573 area codes.
Life Alert, the California firm that advertises "I've fallen and I can't get up," has sued two businesses that used names similar to its brand in robo-call marketing schemes, according to BBB Investigator Bill Smith.
In many cases, senior citizens never received the devices but were still charged the monthly service fee. Others were unable to obtain refunds or return the items. If you think you have contacted by a scammer, you are asked to call the Better Business Bureau at 314-645-3300.
