Scrap theft is part of a continuing problem that a state representative hopes can be addressed with the approval of a new bill that passed both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly without opposition in 2015. While municipalities continue to pass laws to target those who deal in illegally obtained metals, scrap thieves continue to find ways to skirt the law.
Illinois State Representative Jay Hoffman (D-Swansea) says the bill sponsored in the Senate by fellow Democrat Bill Haine of Alton, will create a task force of experts he says will help devise a wide-ranging plan to combat metal theft.

The task force will include legislators, state and local law enforcement, and representatives from the state’s public utilities, rural electric cooperatives, insurance companies, and scrap metal suppliers.
