A thief broke into Schwegel's Market at the corner of Alby and 9th Streets in Alton, but got away with very little for his troubles. Overnight last Friday, a man dressed in a hoodie and mask was seen on surveillance video breaking out the front door with a hammer, walking to the corner and waiting, then apparently after determining the coast was clear, went back through the broken glass.
Bud Schwegel is president of Pearl Marketing, which runs Schwegel's Market. He says the first thing the crook went for was a donation box that was holding money for the Alton Area Animal Aid Association.
Schwegel says a customer came in the store earlier this week and handed one of the employees a note with a name on it, saying that is who committed the crime. He will be taking that note to the Alton Police Department for follow-up.
