A heads-up has been issued by Liberty Bank over the past few days, warning of a scam that appears to be resurfacing in the area. A little over a year ago we first reported a man was calling area residents, claiming to be with the Madison County Jury Commission, and using that ruse to try and get people to give their personal information. He, or someone with a similar story, is apparently back.
The premise is that the man will call and say you have missed jury duty, and then ask for personal information, such as your social security number and date of birth. There are several things wrong with this scenario, according to Jury Commission Administrator Linda Murray.
She says if you get a call from someone using this ruse, do not give out any personal information. The tactic has been reported in multiple states and is particularly successful, as intimidation is used to bully people into giving information by pretending to be an authority.
