The rain has stopped, but the fight is just beginning in the Riverbend. Alton Public Works employees began placing sandbags, Jersey barriers and barricades on Friday. The sandbagging effort is being made easier with the help of an automatic sandbagging machine (pictured, top) that fills the bags before being sent on their way.
Alton's Public Information Officer Matt Asselmeier says a close eye will be kept on the river data as long as it is a threat.
The city is working with Alton Main Street to determine which businesses might have to pump their basements of flood water, and they might have to detour traffic if the water gets high enough next week.
