An obstacle to traffic flow between Alton and East Alton along Broadway is coming back, as work on the eastbound lanes of Illinois State Route 3 over the Wood River Creek begins next Tuesday. The contractor doing the work has been reinstalling the flood gates and constructing new concrete abutments intermittently over the past several months.
There is a planned complete closure the morning of Wednesday, October 24 from 9am-1pm, and again for a five day period in November as the project wraps up. Otherwise, the plan is to keep at least two lanes of traffic open at all times. Dan Miller is project manager for BCI Construction, which is doing the work on the gates.
This is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project. The flood gates have not been used for a number of years, but were instrumental in helping contain the overflow from the Mississippi River that backed up into the Wood River Creek during the Flood of '93.
