Although flood waters have been slowly receding, a number of local streets and highways are still closed or restricted. In West Alton, U.S. 67 remains a two-way road between Missouri Route 94 and the end of the Clark Bridge. The Riverfront Park is still closed and people are being warned to stay away because of swift water and snakes. Meanwhile, Argosy Casino officials hope to have the casino back open by Saturday afternoon.
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers St. Louis District Spokesman Mike Petersen says there appears to be light at the end of the tunnel.
Some estimates have the Mississippi dropping about 6 inches a day. At that rate, the Alton level would drop back into the minor range of 29 feet by Sunday, and Grafton would fall back to moderate flooding - also with a 29 foot reading - the same day.
