For more than half a century runners have gathered in Downtown Alton to compete in the Great River Road Run.  Saturday will be the 56th installment of the event, and the head of the Alton Regional Convention and Visitor's Bureau says it’s not uncommon to see upwards of 1,000 runners at the event if the weather cooperates.

Bret Stawar tells The Big Z the race starts near the flourmill and as the name would indicate, heads up the Great River Road.

Registration and check-in before the event is at Mac’s Time Out, according to Stawar.  There are routes of 2 and 10 miles.  For more information, call the CVB at 465-6676.
