The Mississippi River has crested, but there is still plenty of pressure on area levees. A levee breach occurred at approximately noon Tuesday on the Consolidated North County levee near West Alton. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is keeping a close eye on other levees in the region as the water is still lapping at the barriers.
Corps of Engineers St. Louis District Spokesman Mike Petersen says they are monitoring the situation closely.
Public health officials remind while it's not illegal to play in floodwaters, it's not a good idea due to the potential for disease and injury.
