The fourth phase of the Living Lands & Waters Great Mississippi River Clean-Up is just a few weeks away, with clean ups to be held from Quincy, to St. Louis. Organizers are trying to spread the word that they are accepting volunteers for these clean ups, to be held Saturday, September 15th from 9am-12pm. Locally, there are clean-ups in Grafton and West Alton.
Tammy Becker, Programs Manager for the organization, says the event in West Alton will launch from the Maple Island Boat Ramp just south of the Mel Price Lock & Dam. She says the low water levels will reveal more garbage, but allow less access to the areas that may need the most attention
In April, the Grafton event received a $1,500 grant from Illinois American Water for that clean-up that starts at the Grafton boat launch. They hope remove approximately four tons of debris from the river with the help of volunteers. For more information or to volunteer, call 462-6802.
