At the regularly scheduled meeting of the Bethalto Village Board last night, a resolution was passed in support of protecting the Cahokia Mounds. The Heartland Conservancy along with the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency is spearheading an initiative to have the Cahokia Mounds declared a national park unit.
The initiative, called The Mounds - America's First Cities, would turn The Cahokia Mounds into a protected National Park. Alan Winslow, The Mayor of the Village of Bethalto, told the Big Z, the village has previously worked with Heartland:

The initiative would not just protect the Cahokia Mounds, it would also protect all the St. Louis regions mound sites, including The Sugarloaf Mound in St. Louis, the Emerald Mounds in Lebanon, The Pulcher Mound in Dupo and more.
