Residents around the Riverbend took time on Monday to remember those lost in defense of our country on Memorial Day.  Parades were held in Alton, Bethalto and Belleville to remember the fallen and celebrate those who served, and the ceremonies were held at local cemeteries including the Upper Alton Cemetery and the Alton National Cemetery.

The rain ended before the parades were held in the morning, to the delight of another large crowd in Upper Alton for the nation's oldest Memorial Day parade at 146 years.   The rain did dampen the sunset service at the National Cemetery just a bit, cutting into the crowd, but for the several dozen that did attend, organizer Richard Baird says the time of day it's held is appropriate:

Bethalto has been holding it's parade and service for over 50 years.
