A report about illegal hiring at the Illinois Department of Transportation confirms that previous governors were engaged in a corrupt bargain with government unions. That’s according to Governor Bruce Rauner’s Press Secretary Catherine Kelly.
Kelly says in a statement that the report from a Federal Special Master assigned to oversee hiring at IDOT shows that people were put into protected government union positions after previous governors struck deals with unions. The report, provided by the Governor’s office, says IDOT must systematically address all factors that contributed to the “political manipulation that impacted the use of the Staff Assistant positions” and “it is unlikely that IDOT can avoid a recurrence of the violations” if the issues are not addressed. Kelly says Governor Rauner is committed to reversing the illegal hiring scheme and enacting civil service reforms that will prevent abuses from happening in the future.
