A new procedure at Northwestern University could make it possible for kidneys rejected by one patient to be transplanted into another. Doctors at Northwestern removed a kidney from a patient whose medical condition caused his body to reject the transplant organ. The surgeons then transplanted it into a second patient whose body successfully accepted the kidney.

The report in the "New England Journal of Medicine" says the successful procedure could help cut into the large number of patients waiting for transplant kidneys worldwide.
