A portion of College Avenue in Alton will be renamed during a ceremony Friday afternoon. The stretch of road between Rock Spring Drive and Holman Street will be christened "Eunice Smith Memorial Drive" in honor of the nursing home's namesake and the 50th anniversary of the facility.
Alton Memorial Hospital spokesman Dave Whaley tells The Big Z Eunice Smith was a major player in the creation of Alton Memorial Hospital.

Alderman Alice Martin petitioned the city council successfully earlier this year to institute the name change. Friday's ceremony is planned for 3pm at the entrance to Rock Spring Park.
