Most area students have been back in school for nearly a month, which means increased vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic in school zones. Local, County, and State Police remind drivers to be on the lookout for school buses and be prepared to stop when they're loading or unloading children. And remember, it's illegal to pass a bus that is loading or unloading in most cases.
But there is one exception to that rule, according to Alton Police Public Information Officer Emily Hejna:
That also applies to roads such as Humbert Road in Godfrey, Milton Road in Alton, and other four lane roadways. But on a two lane road, Hejna reminds motorists heading the opposite direction who approach a stopped school bus, with its lights activated and arm extended, must stop their vehicle before reaching the school bus.
