Both of the candidates forIllinois comptroller are pitching the idea of something that shows you how your state tax dollar is being spent. Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka says she will send the information with your state tax refund check, provided there is a state tax refund check for you. Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon, challenging Topinka, reminds us she suggested in April a “taxpayer receipt” in the form of an e-mailed pie chart.

It's similar to the information you get when you pay your property taxes. “I can't say when she got the idea of providing information,” Simon said of Topinka's announcement. “I got this idea from (Congressman) Mike Quigley, who is working on something similar at the federal level.” The lieutenant governor’s spokeswoman in Springfield sent out notice of Simon’s project a few hours after Topinka made her announcement in Chicago.
