After being called too rich to be governor by Gov. Pat Quinn’s running mate, Bruce Rauner is countering by trying to paint himself as frugal.

He arrived at a credit union on Chicago’s South Side driving a 1993 Volkswagen van that’s been featured in his latest political ad. But he claimed showing off the van is not about trying to make voters more comfortable with his wealth.

“No, it’s because, as my wife…will say all the time, I’m pretty cheap,” Rauner said. “I mean, I don’t like to spend money that I don’t have to. I invest in assets. I’ve done very well with my investments.”

Rauner said Quinn is the one who has spent too much on transportation during his time as governor.

While trying to promote his thrifty ways, Rauner also wrote a $1 million check for the credit union--$200,000 of it as a donation to a related foundation, and $800,000 as a deposit into a new account. Rauner will earn a small percentage interest on that money.
