Officials from the Illinois Department of Transportation are in Alton today, explaining the Illinois State Rail Plan. Similar to meetings held previously to explain high-speed rail, this open house will also discuss other modes of passenger rail transportation, as well as the freight aspects of the plan.
There will be information on future passenger and freight rail lines, trends, needs and issues that will come into play over the next twenty to thirty years. There are close to 10,000 ,miles of track in Illinois, and IDOT is in the process of taking inventory of and evaluating its overall rail transportation system. IDOT Spokesman Josh Kauffman says today's meeting will be done in an open house format.
According to the IDOT website the plan aims to do many things, including improving mobility for passengers and freight on Illinois' rail system, and increase its effectiveness. Today's meeting at the Alton Holiday Inn runs from 4-7pm.
