A traffic nightmare and possible public health issue has apparently been avoided in Godfrey. Work on railroad crossings from Alton to Chicago will one day lead to implementation of High Speed Rail service, but IDOT had originally planned to close all four crossings in the village at the same time.
Godfrey Mayor Mike McCormick said that plan didn't last long, and IDOT will now be staggering the closures.
The railroad tracks that carries Amtrak service crosses at Bethany Lane, Pearl Street, Tolle Lane and Alby Street. Work on each crossing could last as little as a few days, or as long as a few weeks. There is a public meeting tomorrow morning beginning at 9:30 at the Alton Holliday Inn to discuss the latest happenings on the project.
