Another railroad crossing in Alton will be closing next week, as Union Pacific Railroad has plans to make repairs to the Washington Avenue crossing. Public Works Director Bob Barnhart says it is his understanding the other nearby railroad work should be wrapped up by then, as the viaduct underpass project at Seminary Street is close to wrapping up.
The Washington Avenue work is scheduled for November 30 and December 1, but is not related to the higher speed rail upgrades that will take place next year. In other city council business, Alton has given first reading to ordinances abating taxes levied to pay a number of general obligation bonds, and is moving forward with the issuance of General Obligation Refunding bonds not to exceed $8.75-million. Demolition proceedings are moving forward at 1320 Highland Avenue, 121 West 15th Street, 616 Ridge Street and 1907 Pleasant Street, but the former restaurant at 619 East Broadway has been temporarily spared, as there is apparently someone interested in buying and refurbishing the building.
