Temperatures will be well below the freezing point for at least a few days, so the Illinois American Water Company wants to make sure you’re home is ready. Company spokesperson Karen Cotton tells The Big Z one of the biggest and costliest challenges for homeowners is dealing with frozen pipes.
She says preventative maintenance starts by taking a look around your home.

Cotton says you should consult your local hardware store when buying insulation material to avoid any potential fire hazards. She also recommends sealing cracks and holes
in outside walls and foundations, like where cable TV or phone lines enter the house.
