The dirt is still sinking under an unopened portion of Illinois 255, but engineers now believe they know what's causing the problem and how to fix it. Last September cracks began forming in the pavement near Seminary Road, preventing the stretch to Humbert Road from opening around last Thanksgiving, as originally planned.
IDOT Engineer Joe Gasaway says they believe the problem is related to the water table, so they will be tearing up the pavement and recontouring the topography.
Work is expected to begin immediately. Traffic on 255 will continue to exit at Seminary until the final leg of the project is done, which Gasaway still thinks will happen later this year.
