Prom season starts later this month, and the Madison County Sheriff wants to make sure it's a safe one. Law enforcement agencies have been known to step up their presence on area roads to make sure unsafe driving practices are stopped or deterred.

Many schools offer after-prom events where the kids are locked in, and have plenty of activities to stay busy without being on the roads or around alcohol. Lakin advises against parents hosting drinking parties. Aside from breaking the law, he says you run the risk of one of the teens leaving the party after drinking even if you confiscate their keys before the party and driving home.
