The Madison County Continuum of Care will gather Wednesday at the Salvation Army on Alby Street in Alton to conduct its fourth annual Project Homeless Connect event. Project Homeless Connect is part of a nationwide initiative sponsored by the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness.
The Continuum is an alliance of social service providers that helps those who are homeless or at risk of being homeless. Over 175 homeless people are expected to attend this one-day event which will involve as many as 100 volunteers and service providers. Dewayne Sanders is a facilitator of the event, and says a homeless person can be described in a variety of ways.
Services will include the distribution of food, beverages and clothing. Participating agencies will also provide medical exams, substance abuse and mental health counseling and legal services. The program will run from 10am-2pm.
