The City of Wood River is making progress on a memorial for veteran's from the city to be built in Central Park this year. A recent $10,000 donation from BP helped jump start the fundraising efforts, and is about a third of the cost of the project. The city continues to collect names of those who served, and so far have 27 names to place on the memorial.
Wood River Mayor Fred Ufert says it will be a nice display, once it's completed:
The black granite memorial will be surrounded by the flags and the monument itself will be located in the part near the corner of Wood River Avenue and Eaton Avenue. At this time, only Wood River residents will be included on the memorial, and for more information, you can contact city hall at 251-3100. The Wood River Heritage Council is also working closely with the city on the project.
