President Obama gave a good speech Tuesday night but is in a tough spot, says a Springfield-based political expert. Professor Kent Redfield of the University of Illinois says the Syria crucible seems to have few positive ways out, especially given the lack of interest other nations have shown in getting involved.

“We're in a terribly ambiguous situation,” Redfield says. Of Obama’s legacy, Redfield says, “Twenty years from now, you may say we’ve changed the trajectory in terms of how America positions itself in terms of dealing with the world, but you really don’t know that until you can look at it long-term.”
