A 58-year-old Royal Lakes man has been sentenced to two years probation after an open plea to two counts of aggravated battery following an incident last November. Earl Keltz Jr. learned his house burned to the ground as he laid in a hospital bed recovering from an alleged beating. He was found lying in a ditch around 7:15pm on November 8, having been beated and stabbed. Less than 12 hours later, the home where he was living burned to the ground.
Police originally responded to a 911 call indicating violence at a home in the 300 block of East Olive Street indicating multiple cuttings or stabbings. Also injured were a 48-year-old woman and a 21-year-old woman. The three apparently knew each other, as Keltz had been in a relationship with one of them. The females were treated and released. The incident fire under investigation by the Macoupin County Sheriff's Department and Illinois State Fire Marshal.
