Principia College in Elsah will host former president of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev next month. He is part of the 2013-14 Speakers Series and will appear on Thursday October 3 at 7:30pm in the Cox Auditorium, with a simulcast of the talk over the college's internet radio station. He's one of a handful of Cold War Era leaders to speak at Principia since the speakers series began in 1997.
The first speaker was former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Former President George H.W. Bush has also appeared at the college located on the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River. Gorbachev was the president of the Soviet Union during the fall of the Berlin Wall in Germany, and helped bring about the end of the Cold War with the United States and Western Europe. College officials say he will discuss his time as leader of what is now Russia, and on the current state of affairs in that part of the world, followed by a question and answer session with the audience.
