For some of our military men and women, coming home can be more stressful than serving. Evidence: a veterans’ suicide rate in the U.S. of 22 per day. “On top of the fact that you’re in a war zone,” says State Sen. Tom Cullerton (D-Villa Park), “you also have to deal with the pressures going on at home and not being able to help or fix it. And you may come home to a life devastated.”
Cullerton is a sponsor of a resolution setting up a “veterans’ suicide task force” to address the needs of our veterans, including the mental health needs. Cullerton served in the Army in the 1990s but did not go to Desert Storm.
