The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration estimates 7-million Americans abuse prescription drugs. Today (Saturday) is National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, and locally, you can drop your old or unused prescription medication at the police station in Alton, or the parking lot behind the Madison County Administration Building in Edwardsville. The Illinois American Water Company urges you to check your medicine cabinet for any old or unused prescription drugs.
Among abusers over the age of 12, research shows 70% obtain the drugs from friends and family members. Water company spokesman Karen Cotton says this disposal program was created through a program developed at Pontiac High School.
The Donald E. Sandidge Law Enforcement Center in Alton has a drop box for old medications that is available at any time. You can find other locations through the link below. The special initiative runs from 10am-2pm. It is estimated more than 4,000 young adults and children have their first experiment with prescription drugs every day.
