Police officers from across the state are set to Cycle Across Illinois today.   The Illinois Chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors, or C.O.P.S., will host their 12th annual cycling event today starting at the Mississippi River in Alton and ending suburban Woodstock, outside Chicago, on Sunday.

The ride will memorialized two Illinois officers who died in 2015 while on duty:  Deputy Sheriff Craig Whisenand of Tazewell County, and Deputy Sheriff Dwight Maness of McHenry County.  Eight officers who died outside of the state, but have family in Illinois will also be remembered.  The 340-mile ride will feature not only police officers but also family survivors of those officers who died while on duty and their supporters.   A number of businesses, universities and other supporters have volunteered to feed the group along the way.  The Ride this morning starts at 6:45am with a tire dip in the Mississippi River near the Alton Marina, with stops in Chesterfield, Waverly and Springfield.
