Alton Police have trained with the Southwestern Illinois Law Enforcement Commission Mobile Training Unit for 42 years, but that partnership may be coming to an end. There is a possibility the City Council will approve a switch from the current Mobile Training Unit to one that serves the area immediately north of Madison County. But a decision is at least two weeks away, as the Alton City Council Committee of the Whole laid over a resolution that would have green-lighted the switch.
Alton Police Chief Jason Simmons says Mobile Training Unit 9, which has regular classes in Quincy, Carlinville and Jerseyville, is an attractive option.

MTU 9 is based in Jerseyville. In other committee action, a resolution was passed to allow the Salvation Army to seek a grant through the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity that will allow for continued operation of a shelter. This is a grant that is sought every year, but this is the first time it has gone before the council for approval. The full council will meet tomorrow night at 7:30.
