Alton Police, aided by U.S. Marshals, conducted a day-long compliance check Tuesday of sex offenders living in the city. Police made 88 stops over several hours to make sure those who are registered were living at the addresses listed and authorities found more than a dozen that were not residing where they were supposed to be.
Police did find that 39 sex offenders were compliant, but many others were either not located or not contacted at the listed residence and officers plan follow up visits. A registered sex offender is required to register with local police in their town of residence, and notify police when they move. Failure to do so could result in jail time for the offender. Alton Police reportedly found child pornography on the computer of one person checked yesterday and confiscated a computer with charges pending based on the outcome of a forensic search of the equipment. The 19 sex offenders that were found to be non-compliant could face felony charges for failure to register. Police plan to seek those warrants through Madison County Court.
