The appointment of department heads was far from a smooth process at Alton City Hall Wednesday night. While most appointments were without challenge, the same could not be said when it came to the appointment of police chief. Jason Simmons will keep his job, but not because of council approval.
A number of people signed up to speak, both for and against the chief. The city council vote was 3 in favor of keeping the chief and four against, at which time Mayor Brant Walker stated he would not nominate anyone else for the job.

Per city code, the chief will continue to serve until removed by the mayor or until a successor is appointed. Aldermen David Boulds, Alice Martin and Carolyn MacAfee voted to keep Simmons, while Aldermen Gary Fleming, Charles Brake, Mike Velloff and Jim Ryan voted against.
