U.S. Speaker of the House John Boehner appeared on behalf of Republican Congressional Candidate Jason Plummer in Fairview Heights on Monday. Boehner was wrapping up a weekend swing through Illinois supporting other candidates and stumping for presidential candidate Mitt Romney. The fundraising breakfast was by invitation only, and news media cameras were not allowed inside the hotel.
In addition to trying to bring attention to Plummer's campaign, Speaker Boehner also touted the choice of Congressman Paul Ryan as the vice presidential pick of Romney. Boehner called Plummer the best congressional candidate in the country, and believed his experience in small business will help the 12th District. Plummer's family owns R.P. Lumber, where he serves as vice president of corporate development. Plummer's supporters paid $250 a piece or $2,500 per table to listen to the House Speaker. The event drew a reported 400 guests. Plummer faces democrat Bill Enyart in the race to replace Congressman Jerry Costello, who is retiring.
