The Alton Plan Commission will hear a zoning change proposal for the former Ursuline Convent on Danforth Street in Alton. A local doctor would like to turn the property into senior independent and assisted living, and a nursing home. The commission will consider the request on November 24.
Dr. Lindsay Barth has requested the special use permit for Grand Development LLC. Barth operates Next Step Foot and Ankle Centers in Alton. He has so far been unavailable for comment, but Alton city officials confirmed the request to The Big Z. The convent and infirmary closed in October 2014 and hundreds of pieces of furniture, religious items and artwork were auctioned off this past spring to benefit the remaining sisters who moved to other facilities. Thieves have broken into the property on at least two occasions, stealing metal for scrap. The Plan Commission meeting is Tuesday November 24 at 1:15pm. It will be the same hearing where a Godfrey couple will ask for a zoning change to place a small restaurant just up the road at 1801 State Street.
