Wind farms are popping up all over Illinois, but renewable energy experts say local governments must remember to plan for decommissioning in the process. David Loomis with the Center for Renewable Energy at Eastern Illinois University, says the most difficult aspect of planning is trying to figure out how much money to set aside when the turbines have become obsolete.

He says it's hard to project how much all of the scrap metal will be worth once the turbines have outlived its level of efficiency. Loomis says that subject will be addressed, along with sitting and taxing issues, at a Wind Farms Conference at the Marriott Hotel and Conference Center in Normal on February 8th.
