The man who pleaded guilty to killing 47-year-old Angie Lish in February will be 64-years-old the next time he is a free man. 22-year-old Donald L. Phelps of Rockford will have to serve 100% of the 42 year sentence handed down by Madison County Judge Charles Romani. In exchange for his plea, prosecutors agreed to drop a second count of murder, and single counts of residential arson and concealment of a homicidal death.
Authorities say Lish was stabbed multiple times following an argument with Phelps, and a fire was set to her home in an attempt to cover up the crime. Lish's body was found inside a bedroom of the home after fire crews put out the flames. Madison County State's Attorney Thomas Gibbons says he hopes Lish's family is comforted by the sentence.
An alleged accomplice, 19-year-old Joshua F. Breden of Alton, is charged with residential burglary and concealment of a homicidal death. His case has been pending, but Gibbons believes it will begin moving again in about 30 days. Lish worked locally at the Airliner Bar and Grill in Rosewood Heights.
