The people pushing safety and sustainability in electricity are not letting the Illinois State Fair go on without them.   The Energy Education Council spokeswoman Kyla Kruse touts the “Energy Zone:” “Fairgoers can check out the solar energy house, and enjoy free Illinois popcorn popped using solar and wind energy,” she said.

And you can feel for yourself how much work it takes to power the old-fashioned incandescent light bulbs; a bicycle is hooked up to the equipment that lights them up, which is more strenuous than the modern CFL and LED bulbs.  Council assistant director Erin Hollinshead says there is another inducement: “We even have a fan you can plug in and cool yourself down during the state fair.”
The fair begins Friday and runs through Aug. 19.
