The Alton Police Department is teaming up with the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Illinois State Police this St. Patrick's Day. They are reminding everyone to act responsibly, buckle up and designate a sober driver before the parties get started. Authorities say St. Patrick's Day festivities often turn deadly with people driving under the influence.
It's not just the potential drunk drivers that need to bear the burden of responsibility. Officer Jason Cole of the Alton Police Department says party hosts need to step up as well.
Police will have increased roadside safety checks through next Tuesday. Many bars and restaurants will be holding special parties over the next week.
