It will soon cost you more money to pay off a parking ticket in the city of Alton. Last night, Aldermen approved an increase in the first month parking charge from $5 to $20. Illegal parking offenses will also go up from $10 to $20. Fines will go up to $50 after 30 days. Use of the tire boot has also been eliminated.
Aldermen approved the measure unanimously. Alton Police Chief David Hayes says the fine structure had been in place for about a quarter-century, and he felt this adjustment would get the city in line with other agencies around the area. As for the parking boot...
The City Council has also voted to terminate its contract with Professional Account Management LLC of Milwaukee, which has had the contract with the city to process parking tickets since January 2003. Beginning April 1, the tickets will be processed in-house, with the Treasurer's Office taking on the responsibility of collecting the fines.
