Holiday shoppers, beware the parking spot you pull into at your local mall! State and local police will be cracking down on people who illegally park in disability parking spaces at shopping malls. Secretary of State Jesse White says the statewide enforcement began Friday, the kickoff to the holiday shopping season.

Police will be enforcing the rules at Malls in Carbondale, Champaign, Chicago, Fairview Heights, Oak Brook, Orland Park, Peoria, Rockford, Schaumburg, and Springfield. White says the mission isn't to issue tickets but ensure parking spaces are available to those who need them.
State authorities issued nearly 200 citations last year during the crackdown, the majority of those coming from illegally using a parking placard. The fine of illegally using a placard or disability license plates is up to $500.
