Two organizations that fight domestic violence are getting $5,000 apiece thanks to people donating their old phones Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon presented checks to two domestic violence organizations in a ceremony at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. The checks came from Verizon after Simon was able to collect 1,000 cell phones to turn in to Verizon. Verizon refurbishes the phones and gives them to domestic violence survivors.

The organizations receiving $5,000 each this year are HOPE in Rochelle and the Cairo Women’s Shelter. This is the third year Simon has done this program; every year different organizations receive the donation.
