A Wood River Police officer will not face charges after he shot a suspect who he believed was threatening him with a vehicle. The Madison County State's Attorney's Office says the actions of Detective Sgt. Dan Bunt were justified after 22 year old Matthew Lane of East Alton allegedly attempted to run over the officer with a stolen vehicle in late January. Lane has been charged with attempted first degree murder.
Lane was treated for a gunshot wound to the chest and arm and released the same day to police. Sgt. Bunt was placed on paid administrative leave right after the incident, but returned to work a week later after Wood River Police cleared him of any wrongdoing. As is standard in police involved shootings, the Illinois State Police conducted its own investigation and passed on its findings to the State's Attorney who also believed the shooting to be justified. Lane remains in custody.
