There’s a sign at the edge of Galesburg that says, “We’re Glad You’re Here.” But not everybody there was glad President Obama came Wednesday. No fewer than three groups demonstrated against the president and those who support him. Jonathan Schweppe, chairman of the Young Republicans of Rock Island County, said, “We had some signs talking about the (National Security Agency), and opposing the NSA’s spying on United States citizens, and we also had signs talking about his economic policies, and how we feel college graduates, unfortunately, far too many are unemployed and underemployed, and we want to get this economy back on track.”

Schweppe says his group met with Americans for Prosperity and the Illinois Leadership Project while the president was speaking inside a gymnasium at Knox College. Schweppe is a 2010 graduate of Augustana College and works in the cashier’s cage at Jumer’s Rock Island casino. He also has worked in the campaigns for former – and possibly future – Congressman Bobby Schilling.
