A method of slowing your vehicle may soon be outlawed in Godfrey. The technique referred to as engine braking can only be done with vehicles that use a manual transmission. Instead of using your brakes, the engine does the work by forcing the wheels to spin slower as you let off the gas.
A side-effect of engine braking can be increased noise, as the engine strains to slow the car. Godfrey Mayor Mike McCormick tells The Big Z one resident has had enough.

The village attorney has been directed to create an ordinance to prohibit engine braking. The process for it to become law could take about a month as ordinances have to be approved through a first and second reading during Village Board meetings. The board may have an ordinance to consider by its next meeting on May 17.
